Cabarrus County school/Park Taskforce
Recommendations
February 1, 1994
Page 2

· Existing campuses should be evaluated for the suitability of
designing improvements to create school/parks where possible.

New school sites should be evaluated for the suitability of a
school/park and designed, where possible, so that the property
can serve as a school/park, whether the park is developed at
once or in the future. ~rnere appropriate, this should involve
Joint design and planning between the school systems and Parks
& Recreation professionals. The architectural program should
specifically state that the campus be designed for total
community use.

· A study of comm~/~ity preferences should be an integral part of
the planning of each school/park. Each study should survey
citizens in the community surrounding the school campus to
determine the types of recreation activities preferred and the
facilities needed to support these activities.

The taskforce recognizes that a countywide school/park system can
be accomplished only by long-termplanning and long-term funding.
However, the taskforce feels that every effort should be made to
support as many faoilitie~ as possible within=fiscal and physical
constraints.

Finally, the taskforce asks that the Board of County
Commissioners, the Kannapolis Board of Education and the Cabarrus
County Board of Education endorse these concepts and take steps

to form a partnership ~o put them into action, in order to
provide recreation facilities for the people of Cabarr~s County.
