Press Release, March 1994
Population Growth in Cabarrus County

early March 1993, population estimates for January 1, 1993 (nearly three years after the last
official Census count) were produced by census tract. A map showing this growth has been
displayed at the office entrance for one year now. These were the first locally produced
population estimates.

In further refining this work, population estimates have been generated for January 1,
1994. The Division again looked at locally produced data. While this technique is relatively new
in Cabarrus, it is both an established and reliable method. B~cause these data are based on
locally generated statistics and the number of new residences relates directly to the total number
of people in the County, they have an even greater likelihood of accuracy than the other two
approaches. Additionally, these data can show where population is growing within the County.
The Planning Division will continue this annual evaluation of permit data to make a yearly
estimate of population and update its projections.

Planning Division data are showing a much faster rate of growth than either of the two
other sources. Attachment Three compares growth projections by the State Demographer,
Centralina and the Planning Division. Planning makes two projections, one reflecting a
continuation of the past four years' growth rate, the other reflecting no growth. Even the more
conservative of the two projections shows Cabarrus with 3700 more people by the year 2000
than either of the other two projections.

Additionally, as mentioned above, Planning's data show where growth is occurring within
the County. Attachment One shows, as one would expect, 50 percent of the permit activity in
the County occurring in Townships One (Harrisburg), Two (Poplar Tent), Four (Kannapolis),
