· Identify the roads in the metropolitan area which support the "Centers
and Corridors" land use vision.

CHARGE--

The proposed Metropolitan Roadway PIan is a 500-mile network that
includes all roads in the metropolitan area that are part of the National
Highway System (213 miles) and North Carolina's Intrastate System (20
miles), as well as other regionally-significant highways (267 miles).

PRINCIPLES

The plan has been reviewed by the Mecklenburg/Union, Gaston Urban
Area, and Rock Hill-Fort Mill Metropolitan Planning Organizations
(MPOs); the Kannapolis/Landis/Concord Transportation Advisory
Committee; the Mooresville Board of Commissioners; and the Monroe
City Couhdl.

The plan has been approved by the North Carolina Department of
Transportation (NCDOT) because it is consistent with the roadway plans
of jurisdictions within the metropolitan area.

Full implementation of the Metropolitan Roadway Plan would require
an estimated $2.1 billion in improvements, including:
· $951 million already programmed by the North and South Carolina
Departments of Transportation (NCDOT and SCDOT) for construc-
tion projects on roadway plan highways;
· 5566 million in unfunded needs on National Highway System (NHS)
and Intrastate roadways (most likely to remain State responsibility);
and
· 5610 million in unfunded needs on the remaining 267 miles of the
plan network.

The $610 million in unfunded needs on non-NHS and Intrastate high-
ways includes $33 million in short-range needs (1995-2005), $416
million in the mid-range (2006-2015), and $161 million in the long-
range (after 2015).
