OFFICE/COMMERCIAL

There is very limited commercial development within this planning
area. A few small scale businesses are located throughout, such as
convenience stores at intersections like NC Highway 73 and Irish
Potato Road and NC Highway 73 and Gold Hill Road. Ironically, due
to alcohol sale laws most if not all of the area convenience stores
are in Concord's jurisdiction. The majority of retail
opportunities are located along the periphery where business parks
have developed near the 1-85 / Earnhardt Road interchange between
Concord and Kannapolis. The Town of Mt. Pleasant has a relatively
smaller sphere of influence on this area, however due to the
increased retail opportunities in the Town, such as the new Food
Lion Shopping Center on Highway 49, residents in the eastern and
southeastern portion of this area may find it more convenient to
travel to Mt. Pleasant. Although there is a lack of retailing
within the area, there are ample opportunities just to the west.
The Carolina Mall is a regional shopping mall located on US Highway
29 in Concord near the 1-85 interchange for Concord and Kannapolis.

INDUSTRIAL/MANUFACTURING

Apart from the agricultural industry, industries within the limits
of the study area are non-existent. The cities of Concord,
Kannapolis, and Salisbury provide the greatest extent of employment
opportunities close by, as yell as the city of Charlotte to the
southeast. Due to the primarily agricultural nature of the area,
lack of water and sewer, and disinterest of residents to invite
industry to locate here, this area has not developed industrially
and more than likely will continue {his trend.

PUBLIC/QUASI-PUBLIC FACILITIES

Public facilities are generally government owned and operated to
perform such functions for the public as education and recreation
(for example, schools and parks). Quasi-public facilities, such as
churches, do not necessarily have to be government owned and
operated.

The Cabarrus County Landfill and the County Sheriff's Department
Shooting Range are the most unique and controversial land uses in
this planning area. Located at the center of the area along Irish
Potato Road, the County Landfill is currently designed for ten more
years of operation. The possibility that the landfill will be
expanded at that site must be considered strongly. There is also
an animal shelter on the property, but it has not been
controversial.

Aside from a small number of churches which have their own
recreational facilities, such as ballfields and playgrounds, there
are no other recreational opportunities for the public except for
the nearby Les Myers park in the city of Concord. The Cabarrus
