The need for add~ti=nal personnel has become critical at the Charles
A. Cannon Memorial L~bcary, Ka~napolts Bcanch. As you will note from the
following chart and the attached graph, circulation (the number of materials
--books, audio cassettes, recocds, videocassettes, filmstrips, etc.--
checked out fro~ the library) has shown a constant ~nc~ease over the past

1986 total of 72,714 items. The number of people on the library stsff,
however, has not changed in that same seven-yea~ period, Pemalntn~ constaht
at seven full time and two part time employees.

CZRCULAT~O_N

~gee 72,714
I987 83,976
1988 99,497
1989 106,32S
1990 113,423
1991 137,422
1992 151,512

The number of ~ater~als checked out fro~ a l~b~a~y affects al~ aspects
of the l~brary's operation. Thus, this ~ncrease in c~rcul~t~on also means
a corresponding tnc~ease ~n the numbec of people v'~s~t~ng the t~bracy,
the number of items ~eturned to the ~t~a~y, the nu~beC of overdue t[ems
and the nu~e~ of items which ~ust be ~etu~ned to the s~elves. Our biggest
p~ob~em ereas for handling the work load ere at the Circulation Desk
{checking out and check~ng tn ma~erfa~S) and with ~eturntng materials ~o
~he~ p~oper places on ~he shelves. ~t ts v~rtually t~posstble for the
library staff to ~eep up with the demands of a steadily ~nc~eastng
work load wh~le at the same time assisting patrons tn a cheerful and
aff~c~en~ ~nner.

The library staff has a~ways taken great pride in the work we do, not
only f~ the number of things we ace able to accomplish, but also in the
~ua~ty we b~ng ~o the work we do. Ou~ main goal has a~ways been and ~l~
