~rru$ County Master <br /> <br />By the year 200:5 to meet minimal recreational requirements there will need to be eighteen new <br />parks developed in the county: (1) regional park; (2) district parks, (6) community parks; and (9) <br />neighborhood parks. <br /> <br />According to the park standards the most pressing curreni and future facility needs include: adult <br />b~seball fields; adult softball fields; volleyball courts; shuffleboard courts; playgrounds; <br />hiking/interpretive/and equestrian trails; campgrounds; swimming pools; archery ranges; golf <br />courses; bike ways; and canoeing opportunities. <br /> <br />An informal survey was prepared for this plan which requested information on perceived facility <br />and program needs in the community. A total number of 161 surveys were collected and <br />tabulated. Significant information obtained from the survey included: <br /> <br />There is a great need to acquire additional land for recreation and park areas. <br />A greater need for these types of facilities exist: camping areas, open space areas, nature <br />trails, water access facilities, biking;hiking/greenway trails, swimming pools, and indoor <br />recreation facilities. <br />Greater needs in program areas include teenage activities, youth athletics and senior <br />citizens. <br />Other interests wriuen on the questionnaires include fine arts activities, programs for <br />special populations and a community choir/orchestra. <br /> <br />A meeting with key community organization groups was conducted to obtain their perception of <br />local recreational needs. The needs express~ by the organizations are summarized as follows: <br /> <br />Land acquisition is imperative. Land costs continue to increase due to growth and <br />urbanization of the county. <br />Parks and recreation is a quality of life issue. The County needs to make a commitment <br />to provide park Iand. <br />Facility needs include: golf course, ballfields, bicycling/jogging trails, tennis courts, <br />small community parks, greenway development, camping facilities, environmental <br />interpretative center, passive park development and a public auditorium for performing <br />ar'ts. <br /> <br />Lastly a public meeting was held to allow the general public an opportunity to review draft <br />proposals and recommendations of the plan and to offer further input into local recreational <br />needs. Significant input from the meeting included: <br /> <br />Do not put the Mt. Pleasant community as a low priority in park development; <br />Support the Three Mile Greenway Plan to Les Myers Park; <br />Majority of those in attendance supported greenways; <br />Consider recreation development around the Senior Citizen Center; <br />Churches wish to help recreation in the community; <br />Consider the expansion of Bakers Creek Park; <br />Do not forget passive activities like fishing; <br />Consider facilities that are unique for Cabarrus County like shooting ranges; <br />Consider public foundations and other means to acquire land. <br /> <br />Woolpert E$.$ Novcm3er 1991 <br /> <br /> <br />
