CATAWBA RIVER CORRIDOR STUDY

PURPOSE

To develop a consensus building document which will provide a
workable plan for how the Catawba River should develop. The
document will be used for future policy decisions by local
governments who are either on the Catawba River or are
affected by the River.

COUNTIES INVOLVED

Centralina will be asking its member counties which border the
River (Mecklenburg, Gaston, Lincoln and Iredell) to
participate in the study. Catawba County (which also borders
the River) will also be invited to participate. Other
Centralina counties such as Union and Cabarrus have expressed
an interest in participating.

STUDY FORMAT

The study will be using a "strategic planning model" which has
been successfully used in many other counties in the
Centralina region and elsewhere in North Carolina as a
decision-making tool. The following is a chronological
summary of the steps taken in generating the study:

a. Creating a Steering Committee

A Steering Committee comprised of 15-25 persons will be
formed. The Steering Committee will contain members of
the Catawba River Task Force and other representatives
appointed by the various Boards of Commissioners. All
counties participating will have the same number of
members on the Task Force. The purpose of the Steering
Committee is to (i) select key areas of concern to be
studied, (ii) review a Status Report of the River
Corridor, and (iii) approve the final study document
prior to submission to the individual Boards of
Commissioners.

b. Development of a River Status Report

The report will take a comprehensive look at past and
present conditions and trends along the River corridor.
Areas which will be examined include (i) land use, (ii)
soil conditions, (iii) water quality, (iv) development
and demographic trends, etc. The purpose of the report
is to give all players involved a comprehensive overview
