materials relative to the history of Kannapolis and northern
Cabarrus County.

In 1991, the Kannapolis History Associates expressed an
interest in supporting the establishment of a local history/gene-
alogy collection in Kannapolis and, if possible, in the
Kannapolis Library. The association expressed a willingness to
financially support some aspects of the establishment of a local
history collection. Since 1992 is the bi-centennial year of
Cabarrus County, the Historic Associates have proposed that this
project be undertaken this year.

With this background, I would like to propose that a local
history room be established in the Charles A. Cannon Memorial
Library - Kannapolis Branch. This room would be created by the
· erection of a partition wall in the "fiction room" of the
library. This room would occupy approximately 25% of the area of
this room and would be dedicated exclusively to local history/
genealogy. With the exception of some of the items included in
the Cannon Mills materials, this room would accept only printed
or written archival materials and photographs. It would be an
archive but not a museum.

The cost of the partition wall would be donated by the
historical associates. It would be of a design compatible with
the interior appearance of the Library. Adequate shelving is
available in the library now as are tables and chairs for this
room. Some items of furniture such as file cabinets and similar
storage furniture and some items of equipment, such as micro-form
reader/printers and micro-computers can be acquired as needed
through donations from community groups such as the historical
and from annual LSCA Title 1 grant funds.

The room would be staffed by Kannapolis History Associates
and other volunteers who would be directed by the Library staff.
Beth Young, the branch librarian, has a background in local
history and concurs that this proposal, while a challenge, is a
desirable and valuable addition to the Library and the community
it serves.

The Kannapolis History Associates agree that all donations
of money and materials made by them or any other group become the
property of Cabarrus County and the ultimate disposition of all
materials donated or purchased is the responsibility of Cabarrus
County.

A local history/genealogy room will be an invaluable
addition to the Kannapolis Library and to the services provided
by Cabarrus County. With the help of the Kannapolis History
Associates, it can be accomplished and maintained at minimal cost
to Cabarrus County.

Prepared by Thomas W. Dillard, Jr.
Library Director 4/16/92
