February 25, 1992

Mr. Tom Dillard, Director
Charles A. Cannon Memorial Library
27 Union Street, North
Concord, North Carolina 28025

Dear Mr. Dillard:

This will confirm our telephone conversation earlier today with regards to
our desire to establish a Kannapolis Local History Room in the Kannapolis Branch
of the Library. This would provide an ideal place to house and display the
archival material owned by Fieldcrest-Cannon and now stored at the Concord
Branch of the Library. In addition, there are items owned by the Kannapolis
History Associates which might be there made available for the use of students
and family researchers. We believe that there are items valuable to the study of
Kannapolis history which would be donated to such a collection. We believe this
would be an ideal time to establish such a collection, while interest in the
Bicentennial Celebration is high.

The Board of Directors of the Kannapolis History Associates, at its regular
meeting on February.18, 1992, voted to pay the costs of building a wall about
10'4" by 65' long, to create a room about 24' by 63'. That should provide ample
space for study, exhibits, and storage for some time in the future. We
understand that the estimated costs of construction at this time would be about
$5400, and would include a 4' by 4' glass panel and a large door. The wall panel
could be covered to complement the library decor. If necessary, we can spend up
to $7000 on the construction, although we believe the actual costs will be close
to the estimate. We have the money on hand at this time. We will also seek to
secure any necessary furnishings for the room, and believe that can be done in
large part through memorial gifts and donations.

If you need further information or documentation, please let me know. We
understand that the entire project is subject to obtaining the approval of the
Board of Co~issioners.' We believe that a Local History Room would be a matter
of considerable pri~e to the people of Kannapolis, D benefit to students both in
Kannapolis and the County at large, and can be done without the expenditure of
public funds.

CEHJr/c

Thank you for your interest in this project, and your help. and advice. With
best personal regards, I am
~~cerely,

/ Cfa. Presr~eCnetE. Horton Jr.
