April 25, 1991 To: ~ichael Ruffin, County ~anager Randy Daniels, Frank Liske Park Super~lsor Cabarrus County Parks and Recreation Department Re: ~elcome Home Operation On September 22, 1990 the National Guard's 1454th Transportation Company based in Cabarrus County was called to active service as part of Operatinn Desert Shield that later became Operation Desert $tor~. January 22, 1991 the 1/485 Regiment Ar~y Reserve unit, also based in Cabarrus County vas called to active service. As a result of these units being activated there were many Cabar~us County families that were without husbands~ ~ives, fathers~ mothers, family members, and friends, These were very hard times fur these families. The citizens of Cabarrus County ahowed their support for our troops and families ~ith yelle~ ribbons, flags, support groups, a troop support rally and Operation Desert Pride. There were however, some sad times ~uring this co. flint when Cabarrns County lost four of its service people. Kenneth Jerome Jackson and Bobby L. yore killed in Saudia Arabia, Billy Ray Holden and Eelvin O, Claspy died serving at Fort Jackson. Hany friends and relatives have felt this tremendous loss of a family member and friend. The l&54th was one of the first units to cross into Iraq when the 8round var began, ~e should all be very proud of all of our military service people that served during this conflict as well as our veterans of previous ~ars. They are our family, frtends~ neighbors, and co-workers, On lta~ch 30, 1991 the 1/185 Regiment returned hame from Fort Jackson to anxious and proud family and friends. It is a~ticipated that the li~4th Transportation viii arrive at Fort Bragg NC on April 24, 1991. They are expected to be home on or around Nay 1~ 1991.
