JAN 1 2 i99U <br /> <br /> STAT~' OF' NORTH CAROLINA __ <br /> <br />FOR ~EDZATE RELEASE <br />Contac~: Na~ge Ho~eZ~ <br /> 919/733~5420 <br /> <br /> FIRST SITE S~ECTION CRITERIA <br /> <br /> The Hazardous Waste Management Commission today <br />released a statewide map showing the application of its <br />first set site selection criteria. <br /> <br /> The Commission's first set of site selection criteria <br />excludes from consideration for the location of a hazardous <br />waste facility areas located: (1) on inland lakes; <br /> (2) on upland bogs or pocostns or on marshes or <br /> swamps; <br /> (3) within a coastal hurricane storm surge or <br /> inundation area; <br /> (4) within 25 miles of an existing polychlorinated <br /> bipheny1 (PCB) landfill; <br /> (5) greater than 60 miles, measured in a straight <br /> line, from the interstate Highway system; <br /> (6) within 0.25 miles of s fault, or with 0.25 miles <br /> of the epicenter of a seismic event with a <br /> magnitude greater than three; <br /> (7) upon a 100-year floodplain; <br /> (8) upon wetlands; or, <br /> (9) within 0.25 miles of licensed and existing <br /> prisons, jails, hospitals, nursing homes, day <br /> care centers, nurseries and schools. <br /> <br /> The cumulative map of the total statewide area excluded <br />by these criteria amounts to 9,781,570 acres, or about 29 <br />percent of the state. <br /> <br /> Some areas designated by the above criteria overlap on <br />the cumulative map.
