40,000 tons/year rotary kiln incinerator
10,000 tons/year thermal treatment
for contaminated soils
15,000 tons/year solvent distillation and recovery
10,000 tons/year residuals landfill
for incinerator ash and
solvent distillation still bottoms
North Carolina's Superfund clean-ups will be treated on
site or at other facilities within North Carolina.

Regional approaches to hazardous waste management are
being initiated nation-wide to~provide a coordinated and
reciprocal effort for establishing regionally needed
facilities. Ail the states have participated to some extent
in regional discussions within their own Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) regional groups. A regional
approach offers economies of facility cost by reducing the
duplication of facilities operating in nearby states.

The Hazardous Waste Management Commission is now
required to recommend the site[s), design technologies,
permit and construction schedule, and operator for the
authorized facilities.

As these facilities are being planned, permitted and
constructed, the Commission is undertaking a concerted
effort to provide avenues for the participation of
interested citizens throughout the State. Through the
pubiic hearings now being held, citizens may contribute
their comments on the development of criteria which will be
used to select suitable sites.

Through monies already budgeted, citizens residing near
areas designated as suitable and preferential for site
development will have access to technical assistance grants
for study and evaluation of the pro3ect.

The Hazardous Waste Management Commission intends to
work toward making all North Carolina communities aware of
their authority to participate, plan and comment on the
development of these much-needed facilities.

HWMC: 1/90
