SAT IMPROVEMENT STRATEGIES

Immediate Strategies
The following recommendations can be incorporated easily into the current school curriculum plan, With
minimal staffdevclopment and resources, each school can undertake a basic SAT improvement process
which will make a positive impact on the scores of our students for 1990.

Encourage all ninth and tenth grade upper level English students who are taking or who have completed
Geometry to take the PSAT for practice and feedback. The State D~par~mcnt of Public Inst~-uct~on is providing
an opportunity for all eligible tenth graders to take a PSAT practice test in February of 1990. To be eligible
the tenth grader must be taking or must have taken Geometry. Negotiations are still going on with PSAT in
determining the type of feedback that each student and/or each school will receive.

Counselors make a concerted effort to advise students about SAT. Consider the following:
I. Counselors should use the class sequence format suggested by State Superintendent Etheridge
(see Chart I), future plans of the student and other academic/achievement data in helping
students decide about takiag this test.
2. Counselors plan and conduct classroom information sessions giving attention to such test taking
strategies as: (I) efficient use of testing time, (2)dealing with test anxiety, and (3) following test
directions.
3. Counselors prepare scorn analysis reports to be presented to faculty. The analysis should include
highest score areas and lowest score areas. The PSAT score analysis is especially important.
4. Information on SAT and ACT should be published in the school newspaper and/or newsletter.
This could be another way to assist students in making a better decision about which test would
be best for them.
5. The ACT is another test option for college admission. Concord High School will be the testing
center.

Use SAT/PSAT format for questions on teacher-made tests in all subjects but especially in mathematics
and English. Use as extra credit problems, vocabulary enrichment, analytical thinking contests, etc.
Samples can be taken from the PS AT/S AT practice booklets, the North Carolina SAT Improvement Project
materials, Amsco SAT Practice Books, as well as many other sources. (See resource section)

In developing goals and objectives for Cabarrus County Schools the school board must make curriculum
and instruction the highest priority. Protect time on learning to thc fullest. Remove as many distractors as
possible from the agenda in the daily operations of the school unit. Supporl the curriculum revision and
administration process with all available resources. Make sure the public and all school personnel are aware
of the county position and maintain a high level of interest in the long range curriculum design program.

Short Range Strategies
Short range strategies are those that can be accomplished by planning, begin ning staff development, and
building resources during the 1989-90 school year for full scale implementation in 1990-91. Rccommenda-
tions include:

Carolina will provide funds to pay for any tenth grade student choosing
The
state
of
North
to take the PSAT.

1
