~RCCC P3,101f~ce Box ,595
Salisbury, Nodh Co~olino
Phone 704 637-0760

' ~'~ ~ Eow~n-Oobarru$ Communlly College
October 3, 1990

Mr. James W. Lentz, Chairman
Cabarrus County Commissioners
PO Box 664 -
Concord, NC g8025

Dear Jim:

You recently received a letter from Ralph Simpson announcing the formation
of an organization called North Carolinians for Community Colleges. This
group, chaired by Governor Jim Martin and the four living, former
governors--Terry Sanford, Bob Scott, Jim Holshouser, and Jim Hunt--is
building support across the state for the Report of the Commission on the
Future of the North Carolina Community College System. The essence of
that commission's report is reflected in the following quote: "For 25
years community colleges have been our competitive edge for economic and
educational progress. If we are to keep that edge, we must invest now.
Every day we delay, our state falls a step backwards."

Mr. Simpson and the North Carolinians for Community Colleges are asking
for your support and endorsement of the commission's report. I have
enclosed a draft resolution and ask that you consider it for adoption.
This resolution, along with others supporting the commission's report,
will be brought to the legislature's attention with the hope of influencing
them to increase funding for community college education. Our system is
in peril and greatly needs your support to gain additional funding to meet
the education ~nd manpower development needs of the future.

On behalf of the Community College System and Rowan~Cabarrus Community
College, we thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

R. L. Brownell
President

RLB:dsp

Enclosure
