Release Number: NN180d <br /> , NEWS <br /> <br /> 9/21/89 <br /> <br /> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br /> <br /> COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES <br /> RECOGNIZED FOR INITIATIVE AND INNOVATION <br /> <br /> CHAPEL HILL -- The Cabarrus County Department of Social Services was <br /> recognized for its initiative and innovation during the fourth annual Recognition <br /> Ceremonies in Raleigh today {Sept. 21). <br /> <br /> Co-sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of <br /> <br />· Social Work, the N.C. Division of Social Services and the N.C. Association of County <br />Directors of Social Services, the c~remony honors the contributions made by county <br />social services departments'to their communities and citizens. <br /> <br /> Fifteen of the state's 100 county social services departments were recognized <br />for their initiative in executing 29 innovative projects. <br /> <br /> Cabarrus County was recognized for its use of staff teams in organizational <br />development efforts. During the past five years, staff teams have, among other <br />things, produced an orientation process; produced an employee handbook p'olicy manual <br />and training guidelines for all agency jobs; and developed a performance evaluation <br />system. <br /> <br /> The recognition ceremony was held in conjunction with the 1989 Social Services <br />Administrative Conference Sept. 21-22. Thomas W. Lambeth, executive director of the <br />Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation of Winston-Salem and president of the UNC General <br />Alumni Association, presented the keynote address on "pUrsuing Excellence" at the <br />conference banquet. <br /> <br /> Dr. John B. Turner, Kenan professor and dean of the School of Social Work, <br />announced the projects selected for recognition. Local ceremonies will be held later <br />in the fall in the individual counties~to present the awards. <br /> <br /> <br />
