(please limit the length of the abstr~act .to the space below) <br /> <br /> C The Department has set an out, tending record of efficiency and accumplishment during <br /> the past five years through the use of .staff teams.for nrga-~xa~n davelopmemt <br /> activities. Each year, an agency-wide planning process sets ohJ~tives for improving <br /> the programs and operations of the Department. Staff teams (mr w~rk groups) consisting <br /> of' representer{yes from each unit of the agency car~y responsibility for the <br /> accomplishment of many of these objectives. In any year, two-thirds of the staff <br /> serves on one of an average of seven agency staff teams. Durimg the past five ~ears, <br /> staff team~ have, among other contributions, produced an orientation process, employee <br /> handbook, policy manual and training outlines for staff in all agency Jobs; developed a <br /> performance evaluation system; conducted assessments of staff development needs and <br /> managed an ongoing staff development/training system; managed a benevolence fund and <br /> conducted departmental United Way campaigns; planned and carried out recognition <br /> ceremonies, agency picnics, ice cream socials and other special events; produced pablic <br /> information and public relations efforts including a widely distributed Annual Report; <br /> developed pslicies and procedures for record keepimg, receptionist f~etions, and <br /> numerous other office operations; p~blished a monthly newsletter; amd developed <br /> "employee incentives" proposals to improve the quality of the work environment. Staff <br /> teams have, by involving staff in planning, decision making, and development activities <br /> heightened motivation and commitment to the Department's objectives and mission. They <br /> have created a sense of community w~thin the Department.
