The mayor (or county chairperson) desi~ates
a representative for a two-year te~, and lndtcates his/her name
on the des~gnation form. (The fo~ may be obtained from N.O.D. on
re~est.) The mayor (or county chai~erson) signs the fo~ and
returns it to N.0.D. The co,unity is then a me, er of the
Co,unity Partnership Program.

N.O.D. and the designated representative stay ~n touch. He/she
soon receives an info~ation packet on national and local
disability matters. N.O.D. encourages all Co,unity Pa~ners
fo~ and strengthen local co~ittees to set co,unity goals and
objectives and to lead in the implementation of pr~rams.

Because the role of the representative l~a~son is so impo~ant,
careful considerat~on should be given to this appointment.
order for the local program to be the most meaningful and have the
greatest potential for realizing its goals, the person so appointed
must have on-going contact with N.O.D. an~ time to make sure a
local co~ittee is organized and doing its work. N.O.D. may refer
in~iries received on our hot-line from people in the local area
to the community representative.

PROG~8 OF CO~ITY P~T~R~
N.O.D.'S co,unity partners undertake many differ~nt kinds of
activit~es. Some cO~untties Work to improve attitudes toward
persons with disabilities; some e~and educational and emplo~ent
opportunities, address transportation needs and/or expand par-
ticipation in recreational, social, religious and cultural
activit~es. Others work to el~minate barrier~ at shopping centers,
hotels, churches, voting places, theatres, lecture and concert
halls, and other public buildings.

There is no limit to the kinds of projects pa~ners should
undertake. The program is up to the community.

Ex.nd [he ~Hici~tion o[ di~bl~ citizens and all of Am~ka ~Jns. Isn't it time ~o 8~ inv--?
