Alternate IA (See FigUre 4A) cQnsists of a three-lane
replacement bridge along the existing roadway alignment.
Three lanes are necessary due to the magnitude of turning
movements on US 601 at each end of the bridge. A 44-foot
clear roadway width would be provided on the structure. A
structure length of approximately 140 feet would be provided
to accommodate a two-lane roadway underneath on NC 49.
Estimated c6st is $643,000 (see page 4 for details).

Alternate lB (see F~qure 4B) is identical to Alternate
lA except that a structure length of approximately 195 feet
Would be provided to accommodate an ultimate four-lane
divided facility on NC 49. Estimated cost is $738,000.

Alternate 2A ~see Figur~ 4C) consists of a five-lane
replacement bridge to be constructed along an alignment
slightly west of the existing bridge. The structure would
be built in half sections .to allow traffic to be maintained
on the existing bridge. A 68-foot clear roadway width would
be provided. A structure length sufficient to accommodate a
two-lane facility underneath on NC 49 would be provided.
Estimated cost is $1,097,000.

Alternate 2B (Recommended - see Figure 4D) is identical
to Alternate 2A except that the structure length would be
sufficient to accommodate an ultimate four-lane divided
facility underneath on NC 49. Estimated cost is $1,228,000.

Aiternates 2A and'2B both require the relocation of two
residences and a building owned by the Cabarrus County
A~bulance Service. Each alternate proposes full control of
access in the northwest and southwest quadrants of the
interchange.

In addition to the alternative alignments studied,
consideration was given to the "do-nothing" and the "rehabili-
tation'' alternatives.

The "do-nothing" alternative would eventually necessitate
closure of the bridge. This is not prudent due to the
traffic service provided by US 601.

"Rehabilitation" of the old bridge is not feasible due
to its age and deteriorated condition.

IV. Estimated Costs

The estimated costs of the studied alternates are as
follows:
