Discussion of Recommended Improvements

A. Alignment
Two b%asic replacement concepts were studied. The first
concept (Alternates iA and lB) consists of three-lane improve-
ments (on US 601) along the existing alignment with a temporary
detour bridge on the east side. The second concept (Alternates
2A and 2B) consists of five-lane improvements with a slight
alignment shift to the west and traffic maintained on the
exis.ting bridge.

The ttLree-lane concept lends itself to symmetrical
widening but the five-lane concept necessitates an alignment
shift to the west for two reasons.

First, the five-lane structure is of sufficient width
that construction in half-stages is possible. Secondly,~
widening to five lanes must be accomplished generally to the
west of the existing bridge. Widening symmetrically would
encroach upon the existing ramps on the east side of the
bridge. This would necessitate revisions to the ramp radii
and grades.

B. Right-of-Way

Shifting the alignment to the west requires acquisition
of two residences and the Cabarrus County Ambulance Service
in the northwest quadrant of the interchange. These reloca-
tions are necessary if the construction of a temporary
detour bridge is to be avoided. The cost of these three
acquisitions ($146,000) is less than the cost of a temporary
detour structure ($169,000).

Although acquisition of homes and businesses is never
desirable, the removal of associated driveway entrances from
the interchange area is justifiable from a traffic operations
standpoint. The existihg driveways (especially those opposite
the north ramp terminal) are undesirable. Only right-turn
access is available. The problem will be compounded with the
construction of additional lanes in the interchange area.
