6

"...the extension of Branchview Drive (NC 136) southward
to South Union Street near this proposed bridge improvement
~(see~Figure 6). This improvement which is programmed for
funding in the State Transportation Improvement Program will
greatly increase traffic flows on US 601 and NC 49."

"The Cabarru~' County Board of .Commissioners have also
requested that th~ widening of NC 49 from US 601 to UNCC be
placed on the State Transportation Improvement Plan. Both
the Kanlacon Technical Coordinating Committee and Transporta-
tion Advisory Committee concur With this request. This
w~dening is needed to accommodate existing and planned
growth in the area."

· "Part of the known growth planned near the NC 49/US 601
interchange is as follows:

1) Initial development of 200,000 square feet of retail
shopping on 75 acre tract bordering NC .~ and US 601.
Plus development of 175 to 200.residential units.

2) Development of 100 acre industrial park on US 601 less
than a mile and a half from subject bridge. One of the
committed industries, Arrowood Mills, will employ over
250 e~nployees.

3) Phoen/x Development Corporation out of Raleigh has
announced plans to develop 150 to 175 dwelling units on
US 601 less than a mile from this bridge project.

4) There are approximately 1,500 acres of'prime industrial
land located' on NC 49 and Stough Road (approximately 3%
miles from bridge project) that will soon have public
water and sewer in addition to existing rail siding."

"No doubt there will be other developments announced in
the future. But the main point is that Cabarrus County is
growing... The proposed US 601/NC 49 bridge project is
located in the central part of the County in an area projected
for heavy growth. NC 49 will need to be widened in the near
future and it seems prudent at this time to consider a four
lane span over NC 49 rather than a two lane span. It is
with these thoughts in mind that Cabarrus County respectfully
requests this change be considered."

2. The projected (2005) volume on US 601 in the
interchange area is 24,300 VPD. The additional cost of
providing five lanes (rather than three) ranges from $464,000
to $490,000 (depending upon alternatives compared).

Provision of five lanes on US 601 will be necessary to
avoid severe capacity deficiencies. Level of Service E will
be exceeded at the south ramp terminals in 1987 and at the'
north ramp terminals in 1988 if three lanes are provided.
