REPORT TO CABARRUS COUNTY BOARD OF C05~ISSIONERS <br /> SEMI-ANNUAL REPORT - JULY - DECEMBER 1987 <br /> N. C. DIVISION OF FOREST RESOURCES <br /> <br />FOREST MANAGEMENT <br /> <br />Thirty-nine landowners were provided on-the-ground assistance; 21 <br />forest management plans were written involving 890 acres. Of this <br />acreage, 348 acres were designated for harvesting and 87 acres <br />were designated for thinning. Two landowners have been referred <br />to private Consulting Foresters, which involves about 273 acres in <br />timber sales. <br /> <br />Harvesting and thinning have been oompleted on 39 acres, yielding <br />64,000 board feet and 350 cords of pulpwood and fire wood. <br />Estimated yield to landowners, cutters, and primary processors is <br />$27,325. <br /> <br />Seventeen forest management projects for Cabarrus County <br />landowners have been submitted to the appropriate state or federal <br />agency for approval for cost-sharing funds. A total of 292 acres <br />are approved for various forestry practices recommended through <br />forest management plans prepared by the North Carolina Forest <br />Service. An additional 166 acres are being processed, with <br />approval expected in the near future. <br /> <br />Site preparation work has been completed on 84 acres for tree <br />planting for timber production. Three acres of timber stand <br />improvement and eight acres of natural regeneration have been <br />completed or established. <br /> <br />INFORMATION AND EDUCATION <br /> <br />The North Carolina Forest Service built and displayed an exhibit <br />at the Cabarrus County Agricultural Fair. The display was made <br />using photographs of Cabarrus County residents' forestry projects <br />to show the cycle of a managed forest and some of the benefits. <br />Pamphlets were available on a number of forest management and fire <br />prevention topics. <br /> <br />Four newspaper articles were submitted to the local newspapers <br />dealing with Southern Pine Beetle infestation, burning permit laws <br />and burning conditions, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and <br />the North Carolina Forest Development Program (FDP). Articles and <br />information were submitted to the Agricultural Extension Service <br />for inclusion in their newsletter. <br /> <br /> <br />
