Report to Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners
Page - 2 -

County Ranger Robert Ward and Assistant County Ranger Mary Hoggard
presented lectures on forestry to all of'the eighth-grade students
in Cabarrus County who attended the Soil and Water Conservation
District tour. Approximately 1,500 students were given
information about the services provided by the North Carolina
Forest Service to Cabarrus County residents.

INSECTS AND DISEASES

Southern Pine Beetle activity is on the increase and will probably
continue to increase the number and intensity of the beetle-
infested spots. Landowners are being notified as the spots are
located and the insect is identified. Salvage cutting, with an
effective buffer strip, is recommended where markets are
available.

A trapping survey for Gypsy Moths placed at 92 locations in the
county has been completed. No Gypsy Moths or egg masses have been
found in Cabarrus County.

Residual effects of two years of below-average to drought
conditions are producing an increase in mortality of both shade
trees and timber producing stands. Hardwoods of various ages have
been affected more than pines or other softwoods. Approximately
30 requests for assistance with shade tree diseases or insects
have been serviced. An examination of the trees at Frank Lisk
Park revealed that the trees are healthy and well maintained.

COOPERATION

The North Carolina Division of Forest Resources personnel attended
two Cabarrus County Firemen's Association meetings and two Chief's
meetings. Two fire departments were visited at their unit
meetings.

County Ranger Robert Ward represented the Forest Service at a
Regional meeting of the Soil and Water Conservation Districts. At
this meeting, information about additional cost-sharing programs
to be administered through the Soil and Water Conservation
District was discussed. This cost-sharing program is designed to
improve water quality through tree planting and other practices
for controlling erosion. Cabarrus County residents will probably
be able to enroll in this program in July, 1988.
