· · · · · · · ·

~%KATE~ CABARRUSO(X3NT~CONOMIC DEVELOPMENT(XIqPORATION

Ah~Vt~tCREPOR~1987

Our first full years operation sho~s noted improvement over our
partial startup year of 1986. This gives us Confidence that the programs
adopted in our startup year have headed us in the right direction to meet
the purposes of the corporation which are to promote economic development
and expansion and new and improved employment opportunities beneficial to
all the citizens of Cabarrus County and to seek and attract new and
relocating industry and business while retaining existing industry and
business.
The 1987 results are weighed by some of the follow statistics:
1. CabarrUS CoUnty employment increased from 12-31-86 to --
12-31-87 by 2,716 which is an increase of 5.4% and
giving us a Work force of 53,910.
2. Building permits issued during 1987 were $65,219,168.00,
which was an increase of $11,775,164.00 or 22% over 1986.
When looking at the breakdown of these figures it is
quite interesting to note that industrial buildings in
1987 were right at $2,700,000.O0'and in 1986 they were
just Under $500,000.00. The one negative in these
numbers is the continuing large dollar amoUnt of building
permits issued for residential structures. This amount is
over 70% of the total which leads us toward a bedroom
co~munity'and this could mean higher taxes if we do not
increase our density on smell acreages with industrial
growth. The one positive note about this number is that
the 71% of the total in 1987 was down from 73.3% of the
total in 1986.

?
