PAGE

STAFF CHANGES

The Children's Room staff has seen some changes in the past few
weeks. Myla Barnhardt, who had been with the Library at the YMCA
and served as Children's Librarian at the Kannapolis Branch for
the past year, moved to Eden when her husband was transferred to
the Fieldcrest-Cannon offices there. Ginger Russell, formerly
Library Assistant in the Children's Room, has been promoted to
Children's Librarian. Jennifer Smith, who worked at the YMCA
Senior Center, began work on December 8 as Library Assistant in the
Children's Room. Jennifer is married to Tommy Smith and has two
children--Amy, a freshman at Lenoir Rhyne College, and Lori, a
freshman at First Assembly Christian School. Jennifer and her
family live in Kannapolis. She has had many years experience
working with children as a Girl Scout leader and is fluent in
sign language. We welcome Jennifer to the staff and look forward
to a growing children's program.

LITERACY WORKSHOP

The Kannapolis Branch will sponsor its second literacy workshop on
January 9 and 10. Eighteen Kannapolis residents were certified in
the Laubach reading method at the Library in November. Over twenty
prospective tutors will participate in the January workshop, thus
more than doubling the pool of local volunteers qualified to fight
illiteracy in Cabarrus County.

BOOKS FOR BEGINNING ADULT READERS

In order to supplement the reading materials used-in the Laubach.
reading method and to provide local adults with materials which are
on an elementary reading level yet concern subjects of an adult
nature, the Library has set aside space for approximately 300
Beginning Adult Readers, or BAR books. Although only a core
collection, these books may attract to the Library adults with
reading deficiencies and thus help improve their reading skills

QUIZ BOWL

Norman Clark, Reference Librarian, is a member of the State Quiz
Bowl committee and will be acting as the Quiz Bowl Authority fo~
local competitions and as an aide in the production of the State
Quiz Bowl Finals in Raleigh on April 11.

STORY HOUR HIGHLIGHTS

Special holiday programs for three groups of children were presented
during the month of December. On December 16, ten preschoolers
were entertained by stories, puppet shows, and holiday crafts.
Children in Grades K-6 came to the Library on December ]8 to hear
