/~,,~'~,, CHARLES A. CANNON MEMORIAL LIBRARY
~f ~,~) KANNAPOLIS BRANCH
A Department of Cab~us Couat).
lOSO Mountain Street
KannapoJis, NC 2808] 704-938-9121

NEWSLETTER JANUARY 1987

LIBRARY SURVEY

The residents of Cabarrus County are well pleased with their new
library and feel that it is an asset to the community. Their comments
on a survey just-.com~let~d:~y:~hekt~bra~y~±ndic&te':~h~y~!find':the
atmosphere a~ the library to be pleasant and friendly and ~he staff
well-trained and helpful.

The survey, which ran for a two-week period from February 2 through
February 14, consisted of a one-page questionnaire filled out by
adult patrons. Two hundred and two (202) patrons completed the
questionnaire. The purpose of the survey was to determine if patrons
are finding the materials and services they need at the library. We
also hoped to determine the feasibility of adult programming at the
library.

As is generally the case in a public library, the majority of the
patrons--48%--came in to check out a book for leisure reading, while
24% came to browse. Patrons looking for an information or nonfiction
book totalled 20% and 15% of the patrons in our survey came to ask a
reference question or for specific information. Eight percent (8%)
of the patrons were in the library to study, while 7% came to find a
book on the best seller list and another 7% came to read a magazine
or newspaper. Reasons other than those listed on the survey which
brought people to the library were to check out videocassettes, to
return books, to make copies, to check out records/tapes, and to
use the typewriter and computers. ~{o people came to the library
just to get a library card.

Of the people who filled out the questionnaire, 95% found the materials
they wanted, 5% did not. Those 5% were, for the most part, looking
for specific information or a book for information; however, one
person was unable to find a book on the best seller list. Sixteen
percent (16%) of our respondents were not aware that we might be able
to get books or information for them from another library.

The majority of our respondents find the times the library is open to
~e convenient for them; however, eight people requested additional
hours, including Sunday afternoons, later on weekends, later in the
summer, and later in the evenings.
