Charles McGinnis March 24, 1987 . , page 2 On October 1, 1986, we requested soil bearing infor- mation by means of either obtaining test borings or using information developed for the construction of the existing Jail' and/or courthouse. This information was received at our office on March 20, 1987, and is vital to the completion of arch/tectural as well as structural drawings and specifications. 2. Probable Construction Cost The directive in our initial meetings with Cabarrus County was to keep the construction cost of the prsposed addition below $1,800,000. In my call to you on February 25, 1987, I indicated that we were concerned that because of changes to the initial scope of work, the budget was in ell likelihood being exceeded. We started the process of developing a new cost estimate on that date and most recently received input on estimated costs for food service and prison equipment from spe- cialists in those fields. In short, our current estimates indicate a construction cost of between $2,400,00 and $2,600,000. The changes in the scope of work that impacted the projected costs include the following: 1. The expanded recreation/multi-purpose room initially designed to be bid as an add alternate was requested to be part of the base project by the Department of Human Resources at our June 4, 1987, review. This in turn added the same amount of area on the first floor to be used as support space for the proposed facility. 2. Approximately 1/3 of the total area of the first floor in the existing jail is to be renovated. 3. The existing intercom is to be replaced. 4. There is a 10,000 gallon gas tank that must be removed and replaced with compacted fill that was not indicated on prior site surveys. CB70323.2
