McGinnis
County Manager
· Cabarrus County
post Office Box 707
Concord, North Carolina 28025

Dear Mr. McGinnis:

We have conducted a preliminary airspace analysis of the six potential sites
for Cabarrus County Airport as requested by your consultant Wilbur Smith and
Associates. Our co~m~ents on each potential site are as follows:

a. Coddle Creek - Location: latitude 35°28'02"; longitude 80042'27''.
Runway alignment 18/36.

The proposed Coddle Creek site would have one favorable direction
for approach which would be to Runway 36. Any approach from the north would
have a 2049 AMSL antenna as the controlling obstruction. The antenna would
not allow favorable IFR minimums. Also, IFR departures to the north would
have restrictions. There is a possibility that a VOR/DME approach off the
Charlotte %'O~TAC can be obtained at this site.

b. Harrisburg - Location: latitude 35°19'13"; longitude 80°37'32".
Runway alignment 8/26.

The Harrisburg site would be highly restricted to a westbound
operation. Also, any instrument approach procedures developed to Runway 08
would have a 2049 AMSL antenna for the controlling obstruction which would
,or allow favorable IER ~nlmums to the runway. Also, IFR departures to the
south would have some restrictions.

The ~arrisburg site is also undesirable becat~se of its proximity to
the McCahren Airport a~ because of a planned antenna tower to be
constructed at latitude 35"21'12"N and longitude 80°36'38"W, near Concord.

'c. Poplar Tent - Location: latitude 35°23'15"; longitude 80o42'54''.
Runway alignment 10/19.

The Poplar Tent' site is not objectionable as far as airspace is
concerned; however, the fact that the proximity of Charlotte Runway 23's
final approach course may cause restrictions to IFR procedures to this site
should be considered.
