Page 2
July 31, 1987

The time ~s right for us to band together to fight the problem.
We are asking you and other local leaders to offer your ideas in
developing processes of cooperation for our state that can be
used at the local level to fight the substance abuse problem.

On September 28, 1987, we are convening a one-day conference at
the McKimmon Center in Raleigh with the goal of developing a
statewide strategy to fight the adolescent drug problem. We are
asking you and other local leaders to join us.

Some key objectives will be:

* to discuss how to mobilize local groups to action

* to discuss beginning action steps which will lead to
effective cooperation in any community

* to showcase several models of coalition that have begun
to build a community consensus

* to discuss what regional support would be helpful to aid
local communities

We invite you to attend and to designate seven additional
delegates from your county. To assure strong, broad-based
community participation, we suggest that you involve key leaders
from the enclosed agency/organization list, which represents a
multi-faceted coalition. Enclosed are registration forms and a
preliminary agenda. Registration deadline is August 28, 1987.

I hope you will personally join us. The idea behind this
conference recognizes that in order to be effective, local
leaders must help design a statewide strategy for any approach
to combating the drug problem throughout North Carolina.

Should you have any questions, please contact Johnny Rodgers or
Deborah Barnes, who are staff for this conference, at (919)
733-4555.

Please mark September 28th on your calendar and plan to attend
this most important conference.

Sincerely,
~me's G.
