I <br /> <br /> REPORT TO CABARRUS COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> <br /> SECOND QUARTER - OCTOBER-NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 1985 <br /> N. C. DIVISION OF FOREST RESOURCES <br /> <br /> FOREST MANAGEMENT <br /> <br /> Serviced 15 requests for forest management work. Eight forest <br /> management plans were vritten, involving approximately 349 acres. <br /> Of this acreage, 72 acres were designated for harvesting; 67 acres <br /> for t~inning; ]5 acres for watershed improvement, and four acres <br /> for wildllfe habitat. Three landowners were referred to private <br /> consulting foresters, involving ]21 acres, for the purpose of <br /> timber sales. <br /> <br /> Harvesting and thinning were completed on 59 acres, yielding <br /> 95,000 board feet of sawtlmber, and 183 cords of fire wood and <br /> pulpwood. Estimated yield to landowners and cutters from the <br /> harvesting and thinning is $12,530. <br /> <br /> Two landowners bare applied for cost-sharing funds on approximately <br /> ten acres. The federal cost-sharing programs are not funding site <br /> preparation work for reforestation this year. Pleasant High School Agri- <br /> culture classes providing information about forestry and made an <br /> e/fort to obtain a planting crew for reforestation work in the <br /> county. <br /> <br /> INSECTS AND DISEASES <br /> <br /> Four small spots of Southern Pine Beetle activity have been located <br /> in the southern end of Cabarrus County. All landowners have been <br /> notified of the situation. The beetle spot which was located during <br /> the first quarter has been controlled. Two of the beetle spots <br /> located during this quarter have been controlled. Control of the <br /> remaining spots should be completed during the third quarter. <br /> <br /> <br />
