8

6. - COHHUNITY OUTREACH Describe your organization's efforts to actively in-
volve racial and ethnlc minorities and speclal pop-
ulation groups (e.g., people with disabilities, in-
stitutlonallzed people, elderly people) in the follow-
lng areas: program development (program piannlng,
implementatlon and evaluation), board and staff
development, audience development, and cor~nunications
(publicatlons, publicity, etc.)

The Cabarrus Youth Theatreprogram has a]ways been open to any Cabarrus County
youth ages ~ to 18. Due to fact that it is open by audition, efforts to recruit
are made only in extreme circumstances. Acceptance to this program is on the basis
of talent and appropriateness for a particular show.

From time to time the theatre performs musical reviews with selections from
various broadway shows. In these cases, special consideration has been given to
racial minorities for feature numbers. Unfortunately, this option is not available
in a straight broadway play.

In regard to audience development, complementary tickets have been distributed
to a number of rest homes for the elderly as well as group homes for the mentally
handicapped. Teh theatre staff works very closely with these outside agencies to
meet any special needs that these groups may have such as: seating area for wheel-
chairs; estas up front for the hearing and visually impaired.

All communications for the theatre in regard to special populations groups
are handled by the department's Special Popula:ions Supervisor.
