PROGRAH DESC~IP?IOI'~: ADOLESCElqT OUTPATIEIqT SUBSTARCE ABUSE TREA~..~T PROGRAH

The increased awareness of chemical abuse and dependency among adolescents has
brought about the need for specialized services. Juvenile Court Counselors
report that approximately B01 of the adoieseents making up their caseloads are
experiencing problems related to chemical abuse and dependency. The local
school system has developed an ipterventiou program to identify students who are
experiencing problems. At chis time there are few resources available lu
Cabarrus County to provide treatment to the adolescents and the faz:ilies who are
being identified by the courts and schools.

This proposed treatment program will provide treatment for these identified
adolescents and their families as well as serve as an aftercare program for
those returning home from inpatient facilities.

This program is based upon the belief that adolescent chemical dependence, as
with all chemical dependency, is a chronic, progressive, fatal, but treatable
illness which affects all areas of the adolescent's life and interferes with the
normal growth process. This destructive process must be intervened .upon if the
adolescent is to grow to productive adulthood. As the entire family is affected
by the illness participation by family members is crucial. Participation in the
recover)' programs of self-help groups is strongly &ncouraged as experience has
sh&~ recovery to be a ~ife-long process.

Th~ treatment process-begins:with:an assessment of :he adolescent;--Information-:- -
will also be collected from the cburt aud/or school system. If the outpatient program is judged appropriate the client and family
viii perticipate in treatment as follows:

1) Adolescents vlll attend group counseling (peer group) for 20 ~eeks (1~
hours weekly).

2) Families will attend 10 weeks of ~auily education (1~ hours ~eekly).

3) After completing the family education group, the client end families
will attend $ weeks of ~ulti-family group counseling (1~ hours
bi-weekly).

6)After 20 weeks client and families viii be encouraged to continue in
the program's support groups for up to 1 year.

5) During the entire course of treat;eat both client and £au2lies ~lll be
encouraged to attend appropriate self-help groups.

lndtm, idual and family counseling viii be conducted as needed. E~ergency
services ~ill be available on a 26 hour basis. Urine drug screens and
breathelyzer tests will be conducted on a rando~ basis.
