k report of the status of the selection process is provided below in
compliance with the July 1, 1986, report date to the General Assembly con-
tained in the amended Act.

The Commission has now begun the first step in a multistep process which
will ultimately identify and qualify an appropriate site or sites through
detailed environmental investigations eventually'including onsite hydro-
geological field studies.

The goal of the first step in this site qualification process is the
identification of a number of pieces of property potentially suitable as a
site(s) for an integrated treatment facility. The Commission has issued a
contract to PEI Associates, Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio, with a branch office in
Durham, North Carolina, as the contractor for this study. The work is under-
way and a brief summary of the status and plans for this project follows.
The study known as the Hazardous Waste Management Facility Siting Study (the
siting study) will result in the production of a catalog of individual pieces
of real estate that are potentially suitable for an integrated hazardous
waste treatment facility. This catalog of candidate sites will represent the
completion of the first step in the multistep siting process. These candi-
date sites will be further considered in the later steps which will include
detailed field inwstigations of selected sites.

The siting study was officially started on June 1, 1986, and work is
currently underway on a number of the tasks. The siting study involves the
fo)lowing tasks:

1. Develop Preliminary Site Plan and Acreage Requirement
2. Develop Area Exclusionary Criteria
3. Develop Site Evaluation Criteria
