CABARRUS COUNTY a
D.epartment o[ Social Services
P.O. Box 668
Concord, North Carolina 28026.0668
James F. Cook, Jr.
January 25, 1985 Dln~ctor

TO: Blair Bennett, County Finance Officer

~RO}I~ Jim Cook, Social Service Director ~
U
SUBJECT: Attached Budget Amendment Request

Attached is a budget amendment request which would add $9090 in 100Z
Federal funding to the Social Service budget for the Crisis~n~erve~filYib~
Pro~ram. ! would like to ask that this amendment req~
by the Board of Commissioners at its first February meeting.

The Crisis Intervention Program is a component of the Federal Low
Income Energy Assistance Program. It is designcd to provide help with
heating expenses to lo~ income families who are experiencing a heating-
related emergency situation. Payments of up to $200 can be made to vendors
in behalf of qualifying families to restore or prevent interruption of
home heating.

~e were advised yesterday that Cabarrus County is being allocated an
additional $9090 in Crisis Intervention Program funds. This is Cabar~us
Countyts share of an additional $1 million allocated by the State on
January 23rd. According to the State, this allocation has been made due
to the recent severe weather and the fact that many counties are running
very low on Crisis Intervention Program funding.

Cabarrus County had been previously allocated a total of $67,268 for
this program for 1986-85. As of January 26, a total of $62,603 had been
spent or encumbered leaving a balance of only $6665. This additional
funding would bring to $56,358 the total funding available for 1986-85. It
will make it possible for us to assist around 65 additional families. In
1983-86, the entire allocation of $68,065 was spent in providing assistance
to 279 households by early February.

Please advise me if I can provide additional information.

Thank you.
