ATTACHMENT #1 <br /> <br /> RESOLUTION <br /> <br /> WHERE. AS, the textile and apparel industries contribute substantially to the entire <br />nations] economy, and more particularly to the economy of our region; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, employees of these industries have exemplified the highest standards <br />of productivity, efficiency and citizenship; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, ?3,9'/? families in the eight County Centralina region depend upon <br />these industries for their livelthood; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, these American industries have been adversely affected in recent <br />years by the growing volume of imports of textile and apparel products from foreign <br />countries; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this growth of foreign imports has contributed substantially to the <br />elimination of some 800,000 American textile and apparel jobs, plus causing an adverse <br />effect upon supporting industries such as fiber companies, textile machinery <br />manufacturers, textile c-heroics] manufacturers, financial institutions, utilities, trucking, <br />and other native industries which also contribute substantially to our economic well- <br />being; and <br /> <br /> WHERE.aS, little has been done at the nations] level to bring about a r~asonable <br />balance between foreign imports and the normal growth of the native industries, <br />witnessed by the faot that textile/apparel imports have increased neatly 50 percent <br />since the first of 1984 over the same period a year ago; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, there is a serious need for public awareness of the economic impact, <br />and a need for action at the state and national levels to bring about a reasonable <br />solution; <br /> <br /> BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, ' that the Centrs]ina Council of Governments <br />hereby expresses its support of the textile/apparel/fiber industries' "Crafted With Pride <br />in U.S.A." Buy American efforts, that eitizees of our region take notice of this <br />serious problem, and that we hereby make this document a part of the record of this <br />body. We further request that Congress take appropriate legislative action to roll <br />back import volume to a reasonable level, with increases in imports limited to no more <br />than market growth, and that an import licensing system be established. <br /> <br /> This, the 23rd day of January, 1985. <br /> <br /> <br />
