, <br /> <br /> REPORT TO CABARRUS COUNTY BOARD OF COfIHISSIONERS <br /> FIRST QUARTEH - JULYt AUGUST~ SEPTENBER ]985 <br /> N. C. DIVISION OF FOREST RESOURCES <br /> <br />FOREST HANAGENENT <br /> <br />Serviced ten requests for forest management work. Five plans were <br />written, involving approximately 198 acres. Of this acreage, 48 <br />were designated for harvesting, 19 acres for thinning. <br /> <br />Harvesting was completed on 77 acres, yielding 171,371 board feet <br />of sawtimber, and 139 cords of pulpwood and fire'wood. Estimated <br />yield to landowners and cutters from the harvesting is $13,830. <br /> <br />Three landowners have applied for cost-sharing funds on approximately <br /> fifty acres for site preparation and planting. Funds should become <br /> available during the month of October. <br /> <br />INFORNATION AND EDUCATION <br /> <br />This office provided a display at Eastern Cabarrus Historical <br />Nuseum for two weekends in association with a natural history theme. <br />In additions a booth was set up at the Cabarrus County Fair. <br /> <br />County Ranger Robert Hard provided s lecture and field demonstration <br />for Northwest Cabarrus High School's agriculture classes. Topics <br />covered were tree identification and forest management. <br /> <br />Assistant County Ranger Nary Hoggard provided a newspaper article <br />to all local papers on safe burning and burning permit laws. <br />County Ranger Ward worked with station VBTV to provide an interview <br />and footage on the Southern Pine Beetle. <br /> <br />INSECTS AND DISEASES <br /> <br />The survey for Gypsy Noth has been completed. All traps collected <br />were negative. A small active Southern Pine Beetle spot has been <br />-located in southern Cabarrus County and will be controlled through <br />this office as needed. The lendowner has been notified and control <br />measures will be completed during the second quarter. <br /> <br /> <br />
