The retiring law enforcement officer's service revolver is a Smith & Wesson 38 Special 4" D459280. Attached is the copy of the law which authorizes the Board of County Commissioners to award these items to the retiring law enforcement officer. § 20-187.2. Badges and service side arms of deceased or retiring members of State, city and county law-enforcement agencies; revolvers of active members. (a) Surviving spouses, or in the event such members die unsurvived by a spouse, surviving children of members of North Carolina State, city and county law-enforcement agencies killed in the line of duty or who are members of such agencies at the time of their deaths, and retiring members of such agencies shall receive upon request and at no cost to them, the badge.~vorn or carried by such deceased or retiring member~i The;:g0verning body 6f a ~law-ehf0~cement agency may, in it~scl~tion, also award fo a {i~etiring member or surviving relatives as provided herein, upon request the Service side arin of such deceased or retiring members, a~ a ~ice determined by Such governing body, upon secur ng a ;~'erm t as required by G;S. 14;402 et seq or 14-409.1 et seq., or i: Wiih6ut Such permit provided the revolver shall have been rendered incapable of being fired. Governing body shall mean for county and local alcohol beverage control officers, the county or local board of alcoholic control; for all other law-enforcement officers with jurisdic- tion limited to a mUnicipalit~ or town, the city or town council for all other law-enforcement othcers with countywide jurisdiction, the board of county commissioners; for all State law-enforcement offi- cers, the head of the department.
