CAgARRUS COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> <br /> TUIRD QUARTERLY REPORT <br /> <br /> JANUARY TtlROUCR blARC}I 1983 <br /> <br />FOREST MANAGEMENT <br /> <br />Management requests received during this per[od totaled 20, with <br />nine of these requests being serviced. Two requests from the <br />second quarter period were also serviced. Completing these re- <br />quests consists of examining the woodland and recommending forest <br />management practices. Oervesting of timber, timber marking, thin- <br />ning pine plantations, timber stand improvement~ wildlife improve- <br />merit, and site preparation for tree planting are included in manage- <br />ment practices. An approximate total of 540 acres is involved in <br />reqnests serviced. <br /> <br />One hundred twenty-three acres of pnlpwood were designated for <br />thinning. Twenty-three of these acres have been thinned, yielding <br />approximately 85 cords of pulpwood, and bringing an estimated $3,3|5 <br />to landowners and cutters. One hundred twenty cords have been thin- <br />ned from previously designated tracts, yielding an approximate in- <br />come of $4,680. Thirty acres of hardwoods have been designated for <br />harvesting. Harvesting has been completed on }00 acres, yielding <br />an estimated 435,000 board feet, at approximately $35,000. Fire <br />wood sales have yielded an estimated $],000. <br /> <br />Tree planting has been completed on about ~82 acres. These Loblolly <br />stands will be checked in ]5 years for possible pulpwood thinning. <br />One acre of Black Walnut remains to be planted. Two landowners have <br />applied for and received cost-sharing assistance. Individuals are <br />being encouraged to leave den trees for wildlife, or plant wildlife <br />foods. An estimated 30 acres are involved in wildlife habitat im- <br />prevement. <br /> <br />INSECTS AND DISEASES <br /> <br />No new spots of Southern Pine Beetle infestation |lave been identified. <br />We continue to check for this and other forest pests on our routine <br />examination of woodlands. <br /> <br />Numerous shade tree problems have been identified, and controls were <br />recommended. Both Technicians attended a one-day shade tree main- <br />tenance workshop sponsired by the N. C. Forest Service Pest Control <br />Division, and the N. C. State University Extension Service. <br /> <br />INFORMATION AND EDUCATION <br /> <br />Articles bave been placed in the Kannapolis Indepeedent concerning <br />tile appointments of Elizabeth M. Shrum and Robert C. Ward and County <br />Technicians. The Concord Tribune was notified of Ward's appointment. <br />Short articles on seedling delivery and fire control have also been <br />published. <br /> <br /> <br />
