COOPERATION <br /> <br /> Working in conjnnction with Mr. Jim Pharr, Cabarrus County Fi£-e <br /> blarshal, "Smokey the Bear" has made several appearances to fourth <br /> graders, reminding them to be careful with fire in the woods. <br /> Fire prevention coloring sheets have been distributed to first, <br /> second, and third graders in tbe county schools. <br /> <br /> Elizabeth Shrum presented a short program, "Forest Tree Seedlings <br /> and How to Plant Them", to the Extension Ilomemakers group. Pam- <br /> phlets on the subject were distributed. <br /> <br />A forestr'y representative has attended the Emergency Operations <br />Board meeting, a~d also the Governor's Interagency Committee on <br />Small Woodlots. Both Technicians attended and g~ve a demonstra- <br />tion of timber stand improvement at the Forestry Field Day on <br />March 29, sponsored by the Agricultural Extension Service ;~nd <br />Small Woodlots Committee. Thirty interested county iodividuals <br />were on hand for the demonstration. <br /> <br />FIRE CONTROL <br /> <br />Sixteen fires have been reported this quarter. The majority of <br />these burned less than one acre. <br /> <br />Technicians have attended several Fire Chief's meetings. Elizabeth <br />Shrum is a member of the Chief's Associatioo for 1983. <br /> <br />WORK PENDING <br /> <br />Thirteen forest management plans, involving about 5~0 acres, remain <br />to be completed. An estimated 50 acres of pulpwood remain to he <br />marked. Follow-ups on projects for ten landowners are also pending. <br /> <br />Robert C. Ward was appointed A~siatant County Ranger on Febru;~ry <br />1983. Robert Ward has previous experience in fire control with the <br />Forest Service in the North Carolina mountains. At this time, Ward <br />has completed the basic fire control training and has bogus the <br />Forest Service Ranger Training program. <br /> <br />Elizabeth Shrum has completed one-half of the required Forest <br />Service Ranger Training program. Plans are to successfully complete <br />all training by October l, 1983. <br /> <br />Any member of the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners is invited <br />to call on eitber Technician at any time. <br /> <br /> Respect fully submitted, <br /> <br /> ELIZABETII M.
