CABARRNS COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> QUARTERLY REPORT <br /> NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION OF FOREST RESOURCES <br /> APRIL - MAY - JUNE ]983 <br /> <br /> FOREST MANAGEMENT ............................... <br /> <br /> Twelve management !equests were received this quarter. Nine request, <br /> from either this or the previous quarter, were serviced. Management <br /> practices include examination of forest land, timber marking, thinning <br /> or harvesting timber, timber stand improvement, site preparation and <br /> tree planting, wildlife habitat improvement, and watershed improvement. <br /> An approximate total of 467 acres is involved in these requests ser- <br /> viced. <br /> <br /> Forty-four acres of pulpwood were designated for thinning. Thinning <br /> work is still in progress on several large tracts, and figures for <br /> these areas should be available for the next report. Two acres have <br /> been completed, yielding about ~5 cords, or $540 to landowners and <br /> cutters. One hundred thirty acres have been designated for harvest- <br /> ing. <br /> <br />Tree planting has been completed in Cabarrus County. An approximate <br />total of ~83 acres of trees were established. Landowners have begun <br />applying for cost-sharing assistance for tree planting for the ]983-84 <br />season. Ten applications have been received, and eight have been app- <br />roved, involving about 93 acres. <br /> <br />Wildlife habitat improvement practices have been recommended on ]6 <br />acres. Watershed improvement practices have been recommended for <br />22 acres. <br /> <br />INSECTS AND DISEASES <br /> <br />Checks are continually being made for infestation of Southern Pine <br />Beetle, but no new spots have been found. <br /> <br />Shade tree problems are still numerous, with most being caused by <br />the cool, wet spring season. Controls were recommended. <br /> <br />Gypsy Moth traps have been placed countywide on a two-mile square <br />grid system. Gypsy Moths are not a problem in Cabarrus County and <br />these traps are a precautionary measure to indicate any possible <br />moth movement into the county. <br /> <br />INFORMATION AND EDUCATION <br /> <br />Articles concerning the spring fife season and the County FFA Forestry <br />Contest have appeared in the newspaper. "Smokey the Bear" visited <br />with Boy Scouts at Frank Liske Park. Both Rangers Rarticipated in a <br />two-day forestry course for county 4-H, sponsored by the Extension <br />Service. <br /> <br /> <br />
