CABARRUS COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS ANNUAL REPORT NORTII CAROLINA DIVISION OF FOREST RESOURCES ]982-]983 FOREST MANAGEMENT ................. Received 65 management requests; serviced 45 of these. Approximate acres involved - 2,039. Total approximate acres marked for thinning - 300. Total acres thinned - ]20. Approximate cords of pulpwood cut - 69~. Approximate total yield to landowners and cutters - $26,904. Tothl acres harvested for sawtimber - T00. Total board feet of sawtimber cut - 435,000. Approximate value of sale - $35,000. Nineteen landowners applied for cost-sharing assistance; ]6 have approved (eight during the fourth quarter). Planting was completed on ]84 acres; 93 acres remain for the ]983-84 season. Approximately 46 acres are involved in wildlife habitat improvement; ]]0 acres in watershed improvement. FIRE WOOD Approximately $2,000 was brought to landowners from the sale of fire wood. FOREST INSECTS AND DISEASES Many requests for assistance with shade trees were serviced. Problems were identified and control measures recommended. Gypsy Moth traps were placed countywide during summer months. No Gypsy Moths were found. INFORMATION AND EDUCATION Articles were placed in the Tribune and Daily Independent concerning forest management, fire control, forest tree seedlings, Future Fariners of America contest, and the appointment of new County Rangers. Radi~ stations were provided spot announcements aimed at fire control. COOPERATION County Firemen's Association and Chief's meetings were attended by the Rangers. "Smokey the Bear" posters were distributed to one fire department. "Smokey" made appearances to fourth grades~ with color- ing sheets being handed out to all third grades.
