THE CABARRUS SCHOOL COOPERATIVE GROUP COUNSELING PROJECT <br /> <br /> (Attachment to Grant) <br /> <br /> The Cabarrus School CooPerative Group Counseling Project is being developed <br />for thcse children who have entered or are at risk of entering the juvenile justice <br />system. This project will involve the contractual employment of one trainee <br />counselor/therapist who will work two hours each day for forty school days in one <br />middle school in each of the two Cabarrus County school systems. The Cabarrus <br />County Schcol S!~tem will serve as fiscal agent for this period. The <br />counselor/therapist will be employee for a period of eight weeks beginning February, <br />1984. <br /> <br /> The decigion to place this program in the midd~ schools is based on court <br />statistics wh~h indicate that more than 90% of all first time r~ferrs]s to the Court <br />occur when the child is between ~he ages of twelve and fifteen years old. A program <br />to reduce referrals in this age group and to prevent delinquency, truancy, drop-outs <br />and school suspensions is c/early needee. <br /> <br /> The counselor/therapist will work with participants in small group counse]Jng <br />sessions toward goals of more pcsitive social behaviors and increasingly higher <br />communication skill~. Other job r ~eJated responsibilities will inc/nde consultations with <br />appropriate school per-oonnel and the coordination of community and family resources <br />to be_st meet the needs of the youtJ]. A portion of the success of this pro~-t is <br />conthngent upon fH]]ng this position with a qua]{f{ee individual~ considerable empba~g <br />is being placed on education and counseling exper/ence. This individual will be sk{1]~d <br />in counseling methods and knowledgeable of therapeutic tschn~ques and resources and <br /> <br /> <br />
