IX~ ~ ~ .... ~ <br /> t;O=LOI~INo .,~ EXTENSIVE INVENTORY WHICH WOULD IDENTIFY AND AC- <br />CESS'HISTORIC AND ARCHEOLOG!CAL SITES WITHIN THE COUNTY, DEVELOP- <br />~[ER'T STANDARDS AND OTHER PROGRAMS [.fHICH WOULD ENCOURAGE THEIR PRE- <br />SERVATION AND/OR ~ ....... <br /> mm.~Ao!LIT,~.TION SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED. <br /> <br />I~-IPLEb~NTATION:. <br /> <br /> An extensive invennory of over four hundred (400) historic <br /> sites has been carried out over the past eighteen (18) months <br /> in a joint efforn sponsored by the Czuy oz toncoru, n,~e <br /> County, and Historic Cabarrus, Inc. This inventory has <br /> been done by a trained architectural historian who has <br /> cataloged t~e significance of each sire identified. <br /> <br /> B. A preliminary zoning ordinance has been written for Cab- <br /> arrus County which includes a Historic Preservation Over- <br /> lay Zone. Under this system, historic sites and areas <br /> would be marked on the zoning map. Such areas would be <br /> allowed all uses in the underlying zoned district, but <br /> would also be allowed uses of a light commercial nanure <br /> (i.e., flower shop, gift shop, boutique, etc.) which would <br /> encourage the rehabilitation and public exposure of such <br /> sites. <br /> <br /> C. A Historic Properties Commission should be established <br /> (Ref. N.C.G.S. Chapter 160 A, Article 19, Part 3B) in <br /> order to select sites which are of special historic value <br /> to the citizens fo Cabarrus County. Thereafter, such a <br /> commission would approve development and rehabilitation <br /> plans in these areas according to their appropriateness <br /> for the historic character of the site. <br /> <br /> <br />
