'~a significant consideration. Developing additional sources for one
year in twenty would partially defeat the purpose of direct surface
water use, and would require additional fsnds.

The Yadkin River is the major river in whose basin Cabarrus
County is located. The Yadkin River is apProximately 30 miles
northeast of Concord at its closest point. It has been da~r~ed by
the Alcoha Company and Carolina Power and Light, and is heavily
utilized by both industries. Neither of these companies are eager
to allow water to be taken out of the immediate area. Pumping
costs from such a distance would be prohibitive.

Surface Water From Impoundments

Many sites for water impoundment have been studied by several
different agencies. Sites of various sizes have been proposed
for the area rivers and creeks. Coddle Creek, Rock River, Coldwater
Creek, Dutch Buffalo Creek, and Black Run Creek have all been studied
within the recent past. A reservoir to serve the additional 4.86
MGD need would have to contain 6.46 to 7.29 MGD to account for losses
to seepage, evaporation, and other sources of loss.

Rocky River: A site on the Rocky River would have the same water
quality problems and pumping costs as the alternative of using it
as a surface source had. Road relocations, existing structures,
and development pressure within the watershed are drawbacks. These
factors combined make further consideration of this alternative
necessary..

Coddle Creek: Coddle Creek has been the subject of several studies.
The most extensive investigation was done for the Concord Board of

-8-
