DIABETES/GLAUCO~ PROJECT <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br /> <br /> The Cabarras County Health Department s governed by a nine person Board <br /> <br />of Health, each member of which is appointed by the Cabarrus County Board of <br />Commissioners. Board of Health members are Cabarrus County residents <br />representing medical, business, government and consumer interest who insure tha~ <br />Cabarrus County residents receive the best possible public health services, <br />The health department's director is Albert J. Klimas, M.S.P.H., who will serve <br />as project director. <br /> <br /> The Health Department offers a wide range of health services to Cabarrus <br />County residents. Health Department services inblude, but are not limited to, <br />immunization, prenatal, child health, orthopedic, and family planning <br />clinics; a supplemental food program (WIC); "high risk" maternal and infant <br />services; sudden infant death and sickle col counseling; public health <br />nursing, and home health care including physical and speech therapy. <br /> <br /> The medical service system that presently exists in Cabarrus County <br />centers around the 450 bed Cabarrus Memorial Hospital. Medical services are <br />provided.by the seventy-five physicians, five of whom are ophthalmologists. <br /> <br />The physicians are concentrated primarily in the area around the hospital. There <br />are ten optometrists located throughout the county. Concord, with a population <br />of approximately 20,000 and Kannapolis with 36,000 people represent the areas <br />of greatest population density. The county population is estimated at 80,000. <br />The hospital is well equipped for most medical and surgical procedures. However, <br /> <br /> <br />
