Report to Co~mty Co~issioners
Cabar~us County
Page - 3 -

2. ~riculture Conservation Program (~CP) - Two l~downers applied for
cost-sharing assistance under this program for a total of four acres
this past year. Both landowners received the 'assistance and work was
completed.

The State-funded progrmm is the North Carolina Forest Development
Program - Two landowners applied for ansistamce under this program for
s total of 21 acres this past year. Both landowners received the
assistance and work was completed.

Four requests for cost-sharing assistance for the coming year have
reached my office so far. T~'ee are under the. Forest~r Incentives
Program and one is under the North Carolina Forest Development Program.
Ten other landowners have ts~ked to me about these programs and are
~l&~uing to apply for assists~nce.

Efforts to publicize the cost-sharing programs will be continued through
newspaper a~ticles, pamphlets, and by word-of-mouth. ~u Assistant County
~nger would be very helpful in all forest management work. The County
~anger would then have more time to spend with landowners who are interested
in forest management work, such as planting, site preparation, thinning and
tLmber stand improvement, wildlife habitat, und special plantings.

D. Information and Education

The County Ranger sets up forestry contests for FFi students once a year.
T~ee schools took advantege of this program tiffs year. I took part in the
following activities: SCS County Tour with five schools; furnished 150 pine
seedlings for ~bor Day to students; visited two schools and passed out True
Story of Smokey Bear comic books; had Smokey Bear appear in two church Bible
Schools; took part in fire prevention activities with the Fire Msrshal at
Wfnecoff School.

E. Pending Reeuests

The County ~anger has five requests for woodland examinations that will be
cs~ried over to the 1980-81 fiscal year. There are 205 acres of pulpwood to
be cut; 257 acres of sawtimbar to be harvested; 52 acres of p~lpwood to be
marked for thinningS and 50 acres of land preparation to he done.

There are 27 forest menegement plans requiring follo~-up work for 1980-81.
Many of these requests, new and old, may not be serviced because the County
Ranger has no assistant and cannot manege all of this alone.
