F_~re Control <br /> <br /> The Cabarrus County ?~mgar had a total of /+5 fires which burned 6t acres <br /> during 1979. The major cause of these fires ~ae smoking and debris b~rning. <br /> The smell number of acres burned is due to the firemen of Caberrus County <br /> and their skill and determination to do a good Job. <br /> <br /> Rural C~mm,zuity Fire Protection Funds are sometimes avs~]able through the <br /> federal government. These funds are administered by the North Carolina <br /> Division of Forest Resources. Northeast VFD has received assistance under <br /> this program. <br /> <br />B. Pe~t <br /> <br /> The Southern Pine Beetle has again infested pine stsnds throughout the County. <br /> The County ft~mger m~He a sllrvey flight on July 9, 1980, and detected 223 spots <br /> of infestation. The hardest hit area is south of Highway 49, but ether areas <br /> are also infested. Most of the spots are Shortleaf pine stands. Control of <br /> these areas is very importaut to forest laudo~aers. Help is needed for this <br /> work. During 1979-80, many requests for shade tree ex~mtuations were serviced. <br /> The insect or disease was identified amd a method of control was recommended. <br /> <br />Co FQ~e~t Management <br /> <br /> This is the area where an ~-ssistamt County Ranger is needed most. '~ing ~iscs! <br /> year 1979-80, 49 timber examinations were made on 1,980 acres. Two hundred <br /> seventy-one acres of timber were marked for thinning, 305 acres were thinned, <br /> ~.~bh approximately 2,506 cords cut and sold to Catawba Timhar Compm~y. This <br /> brought about .~87,710 to landowners and pulpwood cutters from the sale of <br /> pulpwood. <br /> <br /> For sawtimber, 1,750,000 board feet were cut from 285 acres. This brought <br /> approximately ~124,940 to landowners from the sale of sawtimber. <br /> <br /> One hundred seventeen acres of land were prepared for planting and lf~l acres <br /> were planted in Loblolly pines. <br /> <br /> L. andowners in the County now have three programs available which will pay <br /> up to 60 percent of the cost of land preparation and tree planting. Two are <br /> federally funded and one comes from State funds. Federul programs are: <br /> <br /> 1. Forestry Incentives Program - Seven landowners applied for cost-sharing <br /> sssistance under this program for a total of 105 acres this past year. <br /> All landowners received the assistance and the work ~ae c~mpleted. <br /> <br /> <br />
