NII3NTAL H] ALTH CENTI RS
Area Office
· 157 Lake Concord Road
P. O. Box 1050
Conco:d. N.C. 2S025 - Telephone 704.755-I

March 30, 1979
TO: Tom Reece
Jim Ryan
Jim Lentz
Charles McGinnis
Lynh Hughes

FROM: Mae Funderburk

RE: Detox Center

Most of you know that for several months I have been planning on being
away beginning Monday April 2 to return on Wednesday April 11 for my honey-
moon, and since I will be on tour oct of the country it will not be possible
for me to attend the meeting with the County Commissioners on Monday evening,
April 9. You will remember that the Detox Center mssue was tabled until that
meeting. There are a number of issues I would like to bring to your attention:

1. Mr. Tom Reece will be responsible administratively for any presentation
of comments made at that meeting. He will be assisted if necessary
by Mr. Jim Ryan who will be the administrator of that service once it
is developed.

2. Recently there have been expressions of support for the Detox Center
by members of AA and some have made contacts with Jeff McCombs,
Alcoholism Counselor in Cabarrus Center, as well as myself. Efforts
are being made to elicit support within the AA clubs in Cabarrus
County by some of their o~,m membership. It is against the AA traditions
for AA groups to pass any resolutions or take any stands as groups in
support of any outside activities of any other outside organizations,
(Tradition fl6, Page 554 of the Big Book). However, individual members
may elect on their ox.m to support the Detox Center in whatever way
they choose. Yesterday I had an opportuuity to spend some time talking
with a man who has been active in AA activities for a number of years in
Concord regarding AA and the Detox Center. lte personally supports the
plan for the Detox Centdr and is going to try to elicit the support of
a ~5umber of other AA members tO bring support for this project. Some
of them may be making contacts directly with Connty Cmmnissioners to
express their snpport, some may write letters to the Board of County
Commisslo~ers, and some may elect to attend the meeting of the County
Commissioners 'on April 9 to personally and individually speak in support
of the Detox Center. I have been told that the Kannapol5s AA group is

I
