A Statement of Need and Value of Rowan Technical Institute

As It Serves Cabarrus County Citizens

History of Service

Since its early beginning Rowan Technical Institute has served the citizen,s of
Cabarrns County in the field of adult education. Rowan Tech has always taken
this responsibility seriously.

In 1965, Rowan Tech was allowed to begin using approximately 6,000 square Feet
of space in seven classrooms at the Cabarras County School office building. This
space has been provided rent and utility free through the generosity, of the past
superh]tendent Dr. Jay Robinson and the present superintendent Dr. Joe Fries and
the Cabarrus Board of EducatiOn.

However, the Cabarrus County School System has for the past several years needed
this space; so that Rowan Tech now has only one classroom and one office-lab
containing 1,320 square feet.

In addition to this center in Concord, through the efforts of interested citizens
such as William S. Murdoch, Dwight Ouinn, T. H. Wingate, Fred Drummond, Homer Friday
and others, Rowan Tech opened another Cabarrns Center in Kannapolis in May, 1974.
This center has expanded into a very valuable asset to the cc~,,~,~nity. It has been
provided rent and utility free by Cmu]on Mills Company.
