Report to Cotunty Commissioners <br />Cab~'rus County <br />PaEe - 2- <br /> <br />There are two N. C. Forest Service trucks available that are equipped with <br />County and State radios and the Ranger cs_n stay in communication with all <br />County depart~wents, and his District Headquarters in Mount Holly, N. C. <br />The trucks are equipped with water ta~:s, pumps, s~ud motors for fire <br />suppression s_nd other forestry work. He is also equipped with radios in <br />his home and has portable radios that he carries when he is on forest <br />management work in the field. <br /> <br />PEO3PJ~4S: <br /> <br />A. FiRE CONTRfrb <br /> <br /> The Cabarrus County Ranger experianced a total of 81 fires which burned 27 <br /> acres during 1978. The major cause of these fires was debris burning. The <br /> small number of acres burned is due to the firemen of Cabarrus Comnty and <br /> their skill and determination to get the job done and to do it well. <br /> <br /> Rural Qom~unity Fire Protection funds are e';ailable tb_~ough the federal <br /> goverr~ment. These funds are ad-ministered by the Division of Forest Resources. <br /> Northeast Voim]teer Fire Deparkment has received assistance ~u~der this pro- <br /> gram <br /> <br />B. PEST CONTROL <br /> <br /> The Southern Pine Beetle activity has subsided substantially during the <br /> past two years. During 1978-79, many requests for shade tree exm~inations <br /> were serviced. The insect or disease was identified and a method of control <br /> was recommended. <br /> <br />C. FOREST MkNAGE4ENT <br /> <br /> During fiscal year 1978-79, forty tLmber examinations were made on ~,998 <br /> acres. Two hundred tkirty-six acres of timber were marked for thinning; <br /> 357 acres were thi~med, ~¢ith appro*ximately 3,38~ cords cut and sold to <br /> Catawba Timber Company. This brought about $20,304 to lando~,~ers from the <br /> sale of pulpwood. For sa~imber, 937,000 board feet were cut from 159 <br /> acres. This brought approximately $65:590 to lm~dom~.ers from the sale of <br /> sawtimber. Fifty-five acres of l~_ud were prepared for planting this year. <br /> Approximately 70 acres were planted with Loblolly pines. <br /> <br /> <br />
