TO: Charles D. McGinnis/County Manager

FROM: W.S. Chandler, Jr./Director of Planning

SUBJECT: Historical Preservation Grant FY 1980

DATE: October 1, 1979

Please find a copy of the proposed Historical Preservation Grant
for consideration by the Board of County Commissioners. Architec-
tural Historian, Peter Kaplan, will have completed the inventory
of historical properties by the end of the year. The number in-
cluded in the inventory is greater than was first anticipated by
the State Department of Archives and History. The interest in
this project has been emphasized by the enthusiasm of the families
directly and indirectly involved in the inventory as well as the
general citizenry. The significance of a sense of local heritage
has been especially noteworthy in the non-urbanized area of the
County

Attached is a letter of commitment by Historic Cabarrus, Inc. en-
dorsing the project and pledging ~3,704.00 to the projecn. The
County's cash share is the same as that of the City of Concord,
$2,973.00 as compared to the $3,815.30 appropriated by each for
the current year.

In a conversation with David Hood of the Department of Archives
and History, it is understood that a second year's project sub-
mission is greatly encouraged.

The work program for the year 1980 will consist of the preparation
of a publication to consist of approximately 450 - 500 structures
identified as being of historical significance to Cabarrus County.
In addition to the preparation of the publication, National Register
nominations and delineations of historical districts beginning with
endangered properties will balance out the year's work.

In an era of rapidly changing social and economic faces, related
to unparalleled growth within the County, it is perhaps of great
significance that the County be reminded of its vast cultural
heritage and maintain its strong affinity to those things and
evenns that make Cabarrus County a unique and special place.

pds

Attachments (2)
